Therapy for Perfectionism & High-Achieving Adults in Chicago

When being capable on the outside doesn’t translate into feeling secure on the inside.

You may be responsible, accomplished, and someone other people depend on.

But internally, you rarely feel like you are doing enough.

You might move quickly from one goal to the next, replay mistakes long after everyone else has forgotten them, or find that rest brings up guilt rather than relief.

Perfectionism can look like ambition from the outside. But underneath, it is often driven by fear: fear of disappointing people, making the wrong choice, falling behind, or discovering that you are not as capable as everyone thinks.

Therapy can help untangle achievement from self-worth so that success no longer has to come at the expense of peace.

When Achievement Stops Feeling Good

You may recognize yourself in some of these patterns:

  • holding yourself to standards you would never expect of someone else

  • feeling uneasy when you are not being productive

  • over-preparing or overthinking decisions

  • struggling to enjoy accomplishments before focusing on the next goal

  • feeling disproportionately affected by criticism or mistakes

  • being the reliable one while privately feeling exhausted

  • worrying about disappointing others

  • comparing yourself constantly

  • tying your worth to performance, appearance, or approval

  • feeling burned out but unable to slow down

Sometimes I think of this as insecure overachievement: you are objectively capable, but your internal experience rarely reflects that.

What We Work On In Therapy

Therapy may involve:

  • understanding how achievement became connected to safety or worth

  • identifying the fear beneath perfectionism

  • exploring the cost of always being the dependable one

  • developing a more realistic relationship with mistakes

  • learning to rest without feeling that you have to earn it

  • reducing harsh self-criticism

  • building self-worth that is not dependent on performance

  • becoming more able to recognize your own limits, needs, and preferences

The goal is not to make you less motivated.

It is to help achievement come from desire and meaning rather than fear.

Going Beyond Insight

Many high-achieving clients already understand themselves extremely well.

You may know that your standards are unrealistic. You may know that your worth should not depend on productivity. And yet, knowing that does not necessarily change how it feels.

Our work combines deeper insight with relational, attachment-based, and trauma-informed therapy. When appropriate, EMDR can help address experiences and beliefs that continue to drive perfectionism even after you understand them intellectually.
